In small groups the kids were given five items (one per group– a shovel, a turtle, sunglasses, sand and a boat). They were asked to discuss what it was and what you would do with it. Then as a class they had to come together to determine what the main idea of the items as a whole would be. They discovered it was the beach!
The students were then to become their own writers and express what their main idea (as we discussed) , title, setting/characters & for my higher leveled students adding problem and solution to their stories by writing on the notecards. (Picture above)
Each card was color coded and stood for each key detail component (main idea, title, setting/character and problem and solution) on the lined side of the cards they wrote their details and on the back they were able to be illustrators for that “key detail” within their main idea (being at the beach).
My little authors were incredible. And I loved having a new outlook of determining a main idea versus just listening to a text and determining it that way. Self discovery is more fun😉
Thank you for taking a sneak peek into room 219!💚 Happy writing!!
