When learning simple addition foundational skills this was created: numbers 0 through 9 were made and put on cards. 

A card in the first square and a card in the second square then the students had to put that many goldfish or m&m’s in those squares (shown below).


Then I had them move them down under the = line as they counted them so they could figure out the problem.

 It worked really well! Some of them would come to the table and have no clue what 2+3 was but once shown how to do it, it went awesome!☝️ With continuous success this will get them to more challenging double digit numbers!

*** later subtraction can easily be applied in the same manner, but using the steps of taking away/finding the difference  (which would be fun for them to eatπŸ˜‰)
